The Top 30 Menopause Blogs

by on February 17, 2011

If you’re reading this blog, chances are you’re searching for answers and perhaps a community of women to help you through the menopausal transition.  Besides this site, there are other, excellent blogs that are unique and helpful in their own ways ensuring that you’ll find one or two that you’ll want to participate in.  Some are focused on one topic like managing weight gain. Others find humor in hot flashes and mood swings.  Still, some women just want to share their personal journey. Whichever style you prefer, you’ll find one you like on this list of  the Top 30 Menopause Blogs.

I’m flattered that Menopause The Blog leads the pack in the General Menopause section. Thank you Nancy Parker, who created this website for nurse practitioners.  There are many other good blogs too, some of which are new to me.  Here are a few of my own picks from this list:

There’s Help For Women with Overactive Bladders

by on November 5, 2010

An estimated one in three women are plagued with an overactive bladder, which can occur during pregnancy, after childbirth and during the menopause transition. Symptoms range from ultra-frequent and urgent urination; leakage caused by a mere sneeze or cough; frequent urinary tract infections; and urine retention – not being able to completely empty your bladder. Symptoms can appear in your 30s, but it’s a more common problem as we age. Though there are several treatment options that can make life more normal for those who suffer from this type of disorder,  it unfortunately remains a subject that women find too embarrassing to discuss openly, even with their physicians. … [Read more]

Everyone’s Talking About Menopause

by on May 19, 2010

It wasn’t that long ago that Menopause was a hush-hush topic, or obliquely referred to as “the change of life,” if mentioned at all, which it wasn’t.  So, women suffered in silence and gladly took the hormone pills offered to them by their physicians. Now, Menopause is openly discussed by mid-life women and, some, like me, write about it or have created information-rich websites to share knowledge and experiences.  If you haven’t discovered all the great resources available to you online, check out this great list of “50 Great Sites for Menopause Support.”  It was compiled by the good folks at Nursing Schools.Net. (They always have nifty lists).   I’m pleased that this blog was included, but there are lots of other good resources out there too. A few that I follow regularly are Project Aware (#10) Women to Women (#8), and Power Surge .

Are any of these websites favorites of yours? Perhaps you know others that aren’t on this list.

A Wallet Friendly Approach to Fitness

by on January 26, 2010

January is a time for setting new goals…and crowded gyms.  It happens every year.  Resolved to get fit and healthy, new members (or those who have been MIA) fill up group classes and the wait for using the cardio equipment becomes too long for my schedule.  So, I’ve learned to be patient because I know that in just one month, most of them will be gone and I can return to my own, stress-free pace. Until then,  I hit the outdoors for long walks and do Pilates floor exercises at home.  It’s always a fresh reminder that there’s really no excuse for not exercising.

For one thing, there’s so much available on the web to help us plan our workouts and monitor how we’re doing.  Here are just a few examples. … [Read more]

A New Online Resource for Women About Midlife Health

by on October 6, 2009

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists  has recently launched a website for women who are approaching or going through menopause.  The website and the companion magazine, Pause, covers a lot of territory – from hot flashes to urinary incontinence.  The section on Menopause will likely be most helpful to women in the peri-menopause stage, who are still trying to figure out what’s happening to them.

However, there are sections on the site about Tests & Procedures, Conditions or Health ProblemsCancer, and Your Annual Check-Up (about health screening tests women over 45 should have annually) that are all informative and important to know about.

Organized Wisdom – A Wise Approach to Health Search

by on March 10, 2009

Organized Wisdom Health Search

There’s no shortage of information about Menopause on the web.  When you Google the “M” word, more than 13 million results show up.  If you search “symptoms of menopause,” you’ll whittle the list to just over 1 million, but that’s still a lot of information to sift through.  Wouldn’t it be great if there was someone who would review all the health sites and just give us the most relevant, high quality results? Neatly organized, of course. If that appeals to you then check out Organized Wisdom, a search site for health information that’s distinguished by its “hand-crafted, doctor guided” approach. … [Read more]

How To Find An Integrative Medicine Physician

by on February 23, 2009

In my previous blogpost, I introduced Dr. Tieraona Low Dog, a highly respected herbalist and family medicine physician. She’s on the faculty of the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, and serves as its Director of The Fellowship, a two-year course for medical professionals “that teaches the techniques and principles of integrative medicine.”

There’s A Good Deal on DIY Vitamin D Test Kits When You Join the D*Action Campaign

by on February 16, 2009

I recently wrote about a new home test kit that you can use to monitor your vitamin D levels.  Having an adequate amount of vitamin D is so important to your health that a worldwide public health campaign, called  D*action, has been launched to motivate people to take 2000 IU/day of  “the sunshine vitamin” to achieve adequate levels.
