There’s something about the word Menopause that sounds…well, old. I went to a BlogHer gathering a few days ago and while I’ve become accustomed to being one of the older people at any tech event here in San Francisco, I felt particularly matronly as I told other, younger attendees, some of whom write “Mommy” blogs, that I blog about Menopause. “Wow, how interesting. I’ll tell my mother about it,” was the general response. [click to continue…]

When I was in my 30s, I had only two doctors: a general internist & a gynecologist. I typically visited them once a year- maybe. A decade later, I began seeing a chiropractor for regular adjustments. I read a lot of books on stretching and training. I subscribed to the Nutrition Action and Berkeley Wellness Newsletters and I joined a gym. Now in my 50s, I’ve added a nutritionist, naturopathic doctor and occasionally an acupuncturist and trainer to my “posse.” [click to continue…]

I’m back from a Thanksgiving vacation and 5-days of saliva testing, which I shipped to the lab today. As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, I am working with Shaila Schwartz, a Naturopathic doctor at the Noe Clinic here in San Francisco. Once she sees what’s going on with my hormones and melantonin levels, she’ll prescribe a natural, plant-based approach to help alleviate my hot flashes and insomnia, my two biggest complaints these days.
My goal in working with a naturopath goes beyond alleviating menopausal symptoms, though. I want to feel great and age well. I can always fix wrinkles and I can diet. But if I have aches & pains, no energy and weak muscles, I won’t be a happy camper when I’m older. So, while all women go through menopause how we handle it can influence the quality of health for years to come. That’s why I don’t want to take synthetic hormones or sleeping pills every night and it’s why I’m counting calories, exercising and lifting weights several times a week. I sure hope it makes a difference!

Menopause The Musical– a touring revue that launched in 2001, (and the inspiration for the name of my Blog) was recently playing here in San Francisco. My husband wanted to take me, but since I find nothing humorous about Menopause, I discouraged him from “surprising” me with tickets. Since you may still have a sense of humor about it, I offer the link so you can check it out for yourself. Shows are scheduled in 26 cities. If you’ve seen it and are still laughing, don’t hesitate to share here! We can all use a good laugh.
