I was diagnosed with peri menopause at just age 37. Now 42, I am fully into it and have been on HRT for the last year to gain back my quality of life. The hormone took away my night sweats and hot flashes but didn't do much to lighten my attitude. You are so right about exercise being the best defense. Just two months ago I was turned on to several DVD fitness programs made by Beachbody - Rockin Body, Slim in 6 and P90X. They are so easy to do from home that I have been able to increase my exercise to 5 - 6 days per week. All of these programs, combine strength training with cardio like you recommend above. I have more energy than ever and now realize that exercise is going to be my key for getting off the HRT.
