Like many women concerned about the loss of bone mass during the menopause transition, I’ve added resistance training and weight lifting to my three-times a week workouts at the gym. But a recent post in the New York Times Well Blog suggests that this approach may not be helping at all. Instead, some medical researchers now think that simply jumping up and down may be the best exercise for long-term bone health. Gosh – I don’t think my knees would take to jumping up and down. I have been relying on pilates – do you know anything about how effective that might be? I am using a pilates machine.
One way to act upon the advice given in the NYT article is to look for workout routines that include hopping or skipping. I used a kick-box routine this morning on a DVD by Davina McCall (available in the UK) which includes lots of skips and jumps – and also plenty of punches and lunges, perfect for getting the circulation boosted after all these days of sitting around eating too much over the holidays.
